Re: Eccentrick Art Show 2009

Amazing art show this year! I was actually surprised of how talented these art students at Mary Ward are. The media, design, visual and photo students all did a wonderful job on their art pieces, which definitely showed that their hard work was paid off. I really liked the big skull in Art, because it was so cool and creative! I also really enjoyed the art projects of the design students, such as ceramic sculptures. I was with some of those students ever since they were drawing the blueprint of their projects, and many of them turned out extremely well. The photography students had some very nice photo albums and many pictures really looked like they were taken by professionals! Lastly, the Media students did a fabulous job as well, with the multiple exposure and the vectorized inspirational person. I was actually quite proud of myself and was surprised at how my Media projects turned out. This year's Eccentrick art show was definitely a great success, and I really have no criticism at all. Hopefully, next year's show would be the same, if not even greater! =)

Re: Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy

Our generation right now definitely takes technology for granted. After watching that video, I really began wondering why so much teenagers are always unhappy these days, and I can't seem to find a good enough answer. Why is it that us humans are never satisfied with what we have and always seem to want more. I have to admit that technology has become a very important part of my life, and I really can't imagine myself living without it because I have never really experienced a day without technology. However, I think that if technology was never introduced to me, I would have been able to adapt quite well. Sometimes, I think that even though technology has a ton of benefits, it is really starting to spoil everyone. With the touch of a button entertainment is suddenly present in our own homes. People no longer need to confront each other face to face to talk about something, and now, they don't even have to hear each other's voices in order to get a message across. Do these technology really benefit us, or have we all just become lazy bums who sit at home all day chatting online and watching TV? I would actually like trying to live a few weeks in the "old days" and see what it was like. I'm sure that doing certain things would become a lot harder, but I'm also quite certain that people were in much better health back then, with not so much obesed people. Even though I'm saying that technology has harmed our society in some way, I believe that if we use technology for the right reasons, we can definitely make the best of it and it can help our world do great things. Right now, I really cannot think of anymore inventions that could possibly take place in our world now, but I do wonder what the future would be like, and what new inventions are to come!

Re: Cellphone Matter Manners

Cellphones are becoming so much more common in society that people are beginning to not be aware of their surroundings when using their cellphone. Even though I do not own a cellphone, I am well aware of the people around me who do have cellphones and use them at the most inappropriate times. I have seen countless people on the roads, talking on their cellphones while driving. It really annoys me because many car crashes result form a person talking on their cellphone, so these people are basically putting the lives of others at risk. Also, when I see students texting each other in class, I begin to wonder what's so important that it can't wait until lunch or after school to tell their friends. I think that it is extremely disrespectful to the teachers when students are not paying attention and texting away. Sometimes when I'm eating at a restaurant, I see people on their cellphones, talking very loudly, even though they have a table-full of people with them. Seriously, do these people know that they are not the only people in the restaurant and that there are other people there who are forced to listen to their phone conversations? Some people really take their cellphone for granted, thinking that since they have a cellphone, they have the right to use it whenever they want. However, I do not believe that that is the case. There is definitely rules that need to be followed when using a cellphone. Here are some rules that I have came up with:

1. No talking on the phone while driving. This is seriously very dangerous and as if driving a car is not enough to keep a person occupied. Even though some people are great at multi-tasking, it is not a good time to test out that skill when other people's lives may be in danger because of them.

2. Wait until lunchtime or after school to use your cellphone. I'm sure that whatever you need to tell your friend, is not so important that you can't wait for a few hours.

3. Turn your cellphones off when you're watching a movie, concert, etc. It is extremely rude to others when someone's phone starts to ring a closed event. Even though you may not be focused on the movie and the concert, the people around you are trying to enjoy their time.

4. Talk at a reasonable volume so that the person on the other side can hear you, but you do not disrupt the people around you. There is no need to shout at your phone when the other person can hear you perfectly fine if you talk quieter.

5. If you're going to talk for hours and hours on your cellphone, dont. It's a big waste of your money and those radiation waves that come from the cellphone isn't good for you. If you really need to spend hours talking to your friend, I'm sure that you would either be at home, or somewhere that you can use a regular phone. I don't get why people still use their cellphones at home when there's a perfectly good phone sitting right in front of them. Also, make sure that what you have to say is very important, because sometimes, people just waste their time away chatting on their cellphone about nothing in particular.

Colossal U Ad Campaign

Oh wow, how shocked I was when took a look at Colossal University's advertisements. I seriously couldn't believe my eyes when I thought that there was a university out there who treats all their students like robots. I thought that Colossal U was a real university and I felt really disgusted by it, but when I visited the website, I started to relax and realized that this university does not exist at all (thank goodness!). It turns out that this so called "Colossal U" is a completely made up university and it is used to advertise another university called "Algoma". When I looked up the website for Colossal U, it looked like a website that a normal university would have, but just as I was about to click around, a woman walked out and started talking about a university that was completely the opposite of Colossal U.
I do not think that Colossal U is a good advertisement to advertise a university like Algoma. Although I know that Algoma is trying to create a university that is completely horrendous so that people will see what a great school Algoma is, after I saw the Colossal U advertisements, I did not want to know more about it. I wanted to just forget about that school and never hear of it again. The first time I looked at the ads, I thought that the university was trying to say that they are very strict on all of their students and that the students will be treated the same because they are equal. Also, I thought that they wanted to make sure that their students have a successful future, so everything must be perfect and no mistakes can be made, but then I thought what is the point of having a successful future if you are not allowed to experience new things. However, even though I personally would not want to know any more about a university like Colossal U by looking at the advertisements, other people may be more curious than me and would want to see what this university is really about.

I guess I could say that the Colossal U ads give people a mixed and confused feeling. Some people may say that Algoma is really creative in capturing the attention of their audience, but others just might say that Algoma is trying too hard to make their own school look good. In my opinion, the advertisements did not make me feel good and if it wasn't for a school project, I wouldn't have visited the website. But, after visiting the website, I could see what Algoma is really trying to promote. Algoma would definitely be an university that I would want to attend, from the way it was described in the website, but then again, if I didn't know that the Colossal U website would end up telling me about Algoma, I wouldn't have wanted to visit the website at all.

Gaming Gone Wild

Personally, I do not find video games that addicting. When I see some kids who practically spend their lives in front of video games, I feel shocked. I have never owned a video game system and it is not because I do not want to spend the money, but rather because I have no interest in owning one. Many of the times, when I go to a friend's house, we may end up playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero, or some other games, but I would eventually get bored of them and would suggest some other things to do. If I could get bored of playing someone else's video game system, what's the point of having one of these things at my own home? However, I know that there are many kids out there who would not live on with out these games. I believe that the reason to why youths these days let video games swallow up their time is because they are able to escape reality for that little while to enter the cool world of fantasy. Some of these kids may lack excitment in their lives, so video games have them all excited for new things to come. I do admit that I find some games quite fun, but after playing them for while, they just get repetative. In my opinion, time is much better spent with people than machines. Maybe if some of these game addicts spend more time with their family and friends, they will find these much more rewarding. Also, some kids are really letting their grades slip because of all the video game distractions nowadays. Every kid has a bright future ahead of them and their lives should not be wasted away by these time consumers. I think that the parents of children, who's lives revolve around video games, should have more control over their child and should guide their child toward more useful things in life, such as education. Although playing a little video game will never hurt anyone, kids still need a balance in their lives and I believe that it is up to the parents to draw the line.

The Campaign Trail

It's no wonder why Barack Obama won the election for new president of United States on November 4, 2008. This man takes every issue very seriously and promoted his case with a very creative idea. By basing his campaign on the famous "Wassup" commercial that was shown on television in 2000, Obama was able to capture the attention of his audience and then let them know all the things that he will do to make United States a better country. In Obama's commercial, he brought up many issues that United States is dealing with at the moment, such as the war in Iraq, unemployment, expensive healthcare, harsh weathers (hurricanes) and the sudden gigantic drop in stock exchanges. Through this commercial, Obama was telling us that if we elect him as president, all of this will change for the better. It was extremely smart of him to use the "Wassup" commercial as the root of his own commercial. Watching Obama's commercial just brought back the memory of that old commercial, which probably gave everyone a good laugh. However, when the laugh is over, we begin to realize that Obama is really trying to get a message across that he will lead United States to a better future and that we can depend on him to do so. Americans have made a very smart choice when they elected Barack Obama as their new president and we all can see a bright future for the years to come in United States.
